The Title of Australian Champion is awarded to a dog or bitch which has attained a total of 100 Challenge points under a minimum of four Judges.  A Challenge Certificate is awarded to the best dog or bitch over 6 months of age at each Championship Show.

Dogs which have been awarded a total of 100 Challenge points under at least four different judges and at four different Championship Shows may apply for the title of Australian Champion.

A dog must be over 12 months of age before it can be awarded the title of Australian Champion regardless of the number of points it has been rewarded.

Dogs which have be awarded a total of 1000 points may apply for the title of Grand Champion.

Australia and South Africa are probably the only countries where a dog can become an Australian Champion without beating another dog (this is done with 6 point Challenges - not a very rewarding way to complete your Australian Championship).

To assess the worth of a Title it is necessary to see the points on the Challenge Certificates, or to know that a dog has been capable of major Group wins or In Show wins.

On the 1st of January 1998 the Australian National Kennel Council introduced the Title of Australian Grand Champion to be awarded to all dogs which gained 1000 Challenge Points, provided at least one of the Challenge Certificates contributing to those points is gained after 1st January 1998.
